Determined to Educate is devoted to supporting, through group mentoring, some of our city’s most vulnerable young people who are desperate for a way out of poverty. Primarily, we work with youngsters, motivating them to aim high and exposing them to a wider world of opportunities.
Determined To Educate, Inc. was established in 2008 to re-invent communities worldwide by having the young help the old and the old educate the young. We are looking to bridge the intergenerational gap, starting here in New York City. Our focus is for everyone to understand the importance of bettering our community, bettering ourselves and, most importantly, bettering our youth.
At our 2018 fundraiser, we will be celebrating a milestone of 10 years! In 10 years, we have worked with over 7000 students so far exposing them to our amazing programs. Programs like our “Speaker Series” Program which brings prominent figures and professionals to the schools we work with; sharing the life stories of individuals and how they became so successful which includes challenges that were ever faced. ‘The Exposure Tour’ where we take students on trips to different sites in the business world, giving the students the opportunity to be in a different environment. This assures them that there are wider ranges of opportunities for them to grab onto. We were fortunate enough to have visited sites with the students such as The Barclays Center, WABC/Channel 7 Studios and Starbucks’ Corporate Offices. We have also created a “Job Opportunities” program which has landed over 100 students in jobs with companies such as Rite Aid, Walgreens, TD Bank, Eurest at American Express, CBRE at American Express and BJ’s Wholesale. We were also able to collect over 400 suits and dresses (which were donated by high level executives from Fortune 100/500 companies) for students to use on interviews. Our Medical/Healthcare students that met Dr. Oz at “The Dr. Oz Show” in January 2018, left extremely inspired. They couldn’t even believe they had the opportunity to meet him in person. In April 2018, we traveled with over 100 students from NYC/CT public schools to visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture/Smithsonian Institution in DC. It was amazing to them! We also just wrapped up an event at the Harlem Children's Zone with the incredible Misty Copeland! Determined To Educate, Inc. serves about 1000 students a year.
